Shinnosuke Abe, head coach of the Yomiuri Giants—Japan’s oldest and most storied baseball club—formally resigned on Tuesday (May 26, 2026), just hours after police arrested him in connection with an incident involving his biological daughter.
According to a statement from the club, Abe submitted his resignation and it was accepted the same day. The incident occurred at his home in Tokyo, where police were dispatched after receiving a report of a scuffle. Investigative sources said Abe was suspected of assaulting his 15-year-old daughter, causing minor injuries.
Abe, 47, is a legend of Japanese baseball, having been a star player before taking the helm of the Yomiuri Giants in 2022. Under his leadership, the team won the Central League championship in 2024. The club said it would announce a temporary replacement soon.
Police said the investigation is ongoing. Abe has not yet made any official comment on the matter.
