Spain coach Luis de la Fuente says Dani Carvajal remains in contention for the 2026 World Cup despite a foot injury. The 34-year-old right-back must prove his fitness and form before the tournament begins in June.
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente said on April 30 that right-back Dani Carvajal still has an opportunity to be included in the squad for the 2026 World Cup, but must prove his fitness and form after suffering a right foot injury during a Real Madrid training session last week.
“Carvajal is a very important figure in our dressing room,” De la Fuente said. “I actually spoke with him yesterday, so I know what’s going on. He doesn't have a specific injury, nothing serious, but he needs time to return to his usual level.”
He added: “We will see in the remaining games whether he truly has a chance and can show his performance.”
Carvajal, 34, has made only one appearance for Spain in 2025. De la Fuente acknowledged the defender would understand if he is left out of the World Cup squad for the tournament taking place in the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Carvajal is one of several players dealing with injuries in the weeks before the World Cup, alongside Spain teammate Lamine Yamal. His contract with Real Madrid is nearing its end and he is struggling to compete for a starting spot with Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Spain begins its 2026 World Cup campaign against Cape Verde on June 15, followed by matches against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.
