Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has confirmed on Instagram that he is not part of Thomas Tuchel's plans for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In a post on Thursday, Maguire expressed his 'shock and disappointment' at the decision.
Maguire, 33, was a mainstay of the England side under Gareth Southgate, helping the team reach the World Cup 2018 semi-finals and the Euro 2020 final. He also featured at the most recent World Cup in Qatar, where England reached the quarter-finals, but missed Euro 2024 through injury.
However, his impressive form this season, contributing to Manchester United's revival after Ruben Amorim's departure as manager, earned him a recall by Tuchel in March. Yet, Maguire still failed to secure a World Cup berth.
The player, who had been frozen out of the national team since September 2024, last wore the Three Lions shirt in a 1-0 defeat to Japan in March. With 66 caps and seven international goals, Maguire now trails rivals Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa in the pecking order.
'I am confident I could have played an important role for my country this summer after a good season. I am shocked and disappointed by the decision. I wish all the players the best,' Maguire said.
Tuchel is expected to announce the final squad on Friday.
