Hanyu Yuzuru to Skate in Ice Circus Marking 16 Years Since Miyagi Disaster

Former competitive figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu will perform in an ice circus show in Miyagi Prefecture to mark 16 years since the earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan, organizers said.

Hanyu, who now skates professionally after retiring from elite competition, won the men's Olympic gold medal at two consecutive Winter Games. Details of the show were announced on Friday.

Miyagi was among the areas hit hardest by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. It is also Hanyu's home region, where he witnessed and endured the losses caused by the disaster.

The ice circus is scheduled to be held in March, reflecting the community's solidarity in the years since the earthquake and tsunami.
