SEOUL – The South Korean military has launched the formal process to procure a nuclear-powered submarine, as indicated in a Navy document published on May 14. This step follows limited progress in security negotiations with the United States regarding the initiative.
The Navy document confirmed the start of procedures but did not provide specific details on the timeline or next steps. Seoul’s pursuit of a nuclear submarine is part of its strategy to bolster deterrence capabilities against threats from North Korea, particularly in missile and nuclear domains.
The United States has not yet issued an official response to South Korea’s request. Analysts note that Washington’s approval could trigger complex geopolitical repercussions in the region, including reactions from China and North Korea.
South Korea has repeatedly expressed interest in obtaining a nuclear submarine to counter growing threats. However, talks with the U.S. have stalled, partly due to Washington’s nonproliferation commitments.
