Former yokozuna Hakuho, who holds the record of 45 championships in the sport's top division, has been appointed president of the International Sumo Federation (ISF), the governing body for amateur sumo worldwide. The announcement was made Friday.

Hakuho, whose real name is Munkhbat Davaajargal, was born in Mongolia and became one of the greatest sumo wrestlers in history. He retired in 2021 after a career spanning more than two decades, during which he captured 45 titles at Japan's top tournaments. His appointment to lead the ISF marks a new step in the former yokozuna's role in international sports administration.

The ISF governs amateur sumo around the world, in contrast to the Japan Sumo Association, which runs the professional competitions domestically. In his new role, Hakuho is expected to help expand the sport's international reach.
