On May 4, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Ammar al-Hakim condemned the joint US-Saudi airstrikes targeting Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) positions in Iraq, calling it a blatant violation of national sovereignty.
In an official statement, Hakim emphasized that these attacks violate fundamental principles of international law and the UN Charter, further escalating regional tensions. He called on the international community to condemn the action and demanded that the parties involved immediately cease their attacks.
The PMF, also known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, is a coalition of mostly Iran-backed armed groups formed in 2014 to fight the Islamic State (IS). The airstrikes come amid rising tensions between the US and Iraq over the presence of American military forces on Iraqi soil.
The US and Saudi Arabia have not yet issued official comments on Hakim's allegations.
