Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stressed on May 15 that the United States must fully honor its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum, a document signed between Tehran and Washington to resolve differences over Iran's nuclear program.
Speaking at a parliamentary session, Ghalibaf argued that the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) under former President Donald Trump was a clear violation of international obligations. Accordingly, the Islamabad MoU also requires Washington to provide compensation and guarantee economic benefits for Iran.
The Islamabad Memorandum has been referenced in negotiations between Iran and involved parties, including the US, aimed at finding a diplomatic solution to the nuclear issue. According to Ghalibaf, if the US continues to delay or fails to implement its commitments, Tehran will have the right to respond with countermeasures.
Ghalibaf's statement comes as nuclear talks in Vienna have yet to achieve concrete progress. Iran has repeatedly asserted its firm stance on protecting its civilian nuclear program while calling on Western parties to lift sanctions in line with the spirit of the agreement.
Earlier, Iran's top diplomat also emphasized that the success of any agreement depends on the complete removal of economic sanctions, a factor considered central to current negotiations.
