Bruno Fernandes produced a dazzling display, scoring all three of his goals in Manchester United's 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town, giving manager Michael Carrick's side their first Premier League win of the campaign.
The match at Old Trafford featured a captivating back-and-forth. Ipswich took a surprise lead in the 29th minute through Leif Davis, assisted by Abdul Fatawu. However, Fernandes quickly equalised before halftime with a powerful left-footed strike. In the second half, Manchester United moved ahead thanks to an own goal from Jacob Greaves, and Fernandes completed his hat-trick with a penalty and a close-range finish.
The United captain then turned provider, setting up Bryan Mbeumo for a goal that sealed a emphatic victory. In stoppage time, Ipswich grabbed a consolation through Chuba Akpom after a Lisandro Martinez error, but it was too little to change the outcome.
This win was a strong response to the 0-2 opening-day defeat at Hull City. Carrick made four changes to the starting line-up, notably giving Marcus Rashford his first start in nearly two years. Rashford's return, along with Kobbie Mainoo, helped United's midfield play with more fluidity, though defensive gaps remained evident.
With this hat-trick, Fernandes has now scored three goals in just two league matches, matching one-third of his total from last season (nine). Earlier, the Portuguese midfielder was voted Players' Player of the Season by his peers, thanks to a record 21 Premier League assists.
