A senior Iranian diplomat said on June 24 that the European Union's support for US sanctions against Iran constitutes a violation of international law and the fundamental principles of international relations.
Speaking at a press conference in Tehran, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Abbas Araghchi, stressed that the EU's move runs counter to its commitments under the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
"The EU has clearly violated its obligations under the JCPOA by pursuing a policy of endorsing the United States' unilateral sanctions," Araghchi said. "This action not only undermines the agreement but also erodes trust in international accords."
The United States withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 and reimposed tough economic sanctions on Iran. The EU has maintained diplomatic efforts to preserve the deal, though Tehran has criticized some of the bloc's sanctions measures in recent years as inconsistent with its commitments.
The Iranian diplomat also called on the EU to reconsider its stance and return to full compliance with the JCPOA to facilitate dialogue and reduce regional tensions. He warned that continued support for US sanctions would only further complicate the situation and deepen disagreements.
There has been no official reaction from the EU so far. However, European officials have previously emphasized that the bloc remains committed to the JCPOA and views it as a key agreement to prevent nuclear proliferation.
