A serious bus accident in Egypt's South Sinai governorate has claimed the lives of at least 16 people and left 28 others injured, the Ministry of Health and Population confirmed.
The crash took place on Wednesday morning on the road between Dahab and Nuweiba, located along the eastern coast of the Sinai Peninsula. The area is home to several Red Sea resorts, a popular destination for tourists.
Health Ministry spokesman Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said 20 ambulances were dispatched to the scene to evacuate and treat the wounded. Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar also instructed medical facilities to increase their readiness and provide necessary medical care, medicines, and supplies to the victims.
Deadly traffic accidents are a recurring problem in Egypt. According to Egypt's State Statistics Agency, nearly 6,000 people died in traffic accidents nationwide last year. Earlier, last month, a truck accident in the northeastern Ismailia governorate killed 18 people and injured 30 others, many of them child laborers.
