On August 23, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported detecting a magnitude 4.8 earthquake off the northern coast of Venezuela. The quake struck at 15:20 local time (19:20 GMT) near Aragua state, in the northern part of the country.
This is the latest aftershock in a series of tremors following two powerful quakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 that hit Venezuela on August 21. In the wake of these major tremors, rescue teams are racing to find any survivors who may still be trapped under the rubble.
According to the latest figures, at least 1,430 deaths have been confirmed, with more than 51,000 others still missing. Authorities report that many areas have been severely damaged, and rescue crews are struggling to reach remote and hard-hit regions.
Earthquake warnings remain in effect for several coastal provinces, as residents fear additional dangerous aftershocks.
