A United Nations investigation report published Tuesday said Myanmar's military has escalated airstrikes against civilians amid conflict with anti-government armed groups, notably using low-cost aircraft such as motorized paragliders and light propeller planes.
According to the report, the use of these aircraft is increasingly common, enabling the military to carry out aerial attacks at lower cost while still causing significant civilian casualties. UN investigators recorded a rise in airstrikes in recent times, targeting densely populated areas, schools, and hospitals.
The report indicated the expanded air campaign is part of the military's strategy to counter rebel armed forces, but the heavy toll falls on civilians. Experts noted the use of adapted civilian aircraft for military purposes shows tactical adaptation while increasing risks to civilians.
The UN called on Myanmar's military to immediately halt attacks on civilians and comply with international humanitarian law. The report also urged the international community to increase pressure to protect people and ensure accountability for violations.
