According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 7:40 a.m. local time. Its initial magnitude was recorded at 8.2, strong enough to trigger a tsunami.
Shortly after, authorities in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Japan issued tsunami warnings for coastal areas deemed at risk. Residents were advised to leave areas near the shore and avoid beaches and ports.
The USGS also recommended that people in affected areas immediately leave the water and move inland to ensure their safety.
