Japanese actress Tamao Nakamura, recognized for her many roles in historical films and her humorous comments on television programs, has died at 86, her management company confirmed Friday.
Nakamura passed away at a hospital in Tokyo on July 2. The cause of death was not disclosed at the family's request. A private funeral will be held with relatives only.
Born in Tokyo, Nakamura began her acting career at age 15. She appeared in numerous acclaimed period dramas (jidaigeki), notably the "Oniyakko" and "Daikomei" series. She also charmed audiences with her witty and humorous remarks on variety shows.
In her later years, Nakamura remained active in the arts, participating in television shows and cultural events. She is regarded as one of the veteran actresses who made significant contributions to Japanese cinema and television.
