Japan's remote Minamitori Island, located in the far east of the archipelago, is drawing special attention from national authorities. According to reports, the island is being considered for two contrasting purposes: experimental mining of rare earth elements from the surrounding seabed and serving as a final disposal site for high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants.
The rare earth mining trials in this area are expected to help Japan reduce its reliance on foreign suppliers, especially as these elements are crucial for producing electronics, electric vehicle batteries, and other advanced technologies. However, alongside this economic promise, the plan to use Minamitori Island as a nuclear waste storage site is sparking controversy, particularly over environmental safety concerns and opposition from local communities and environmental organizations.
The Japanese government has not made a final decision on either project, but surveys and research on Minamitori are ongoing. Experts suggest that combining both objectives on one island would pose significant technical and legal challenges, especially in ensuring absolute safety for both mining operations and radioactive waste storage.
