The Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games officially opened on Sunday with an opening ceremony, marking a continental sporting event that brings together around 4,000 athletes and officials.
According to the organizers, this edition has drawn a record number of delegations, with 45 countries and regions taking part — more than at previous Games. The event is being held in Aichi Prefecture and the city of Nagoya in Japan.
The opening ceremony launches days of competition for athletes with disabilities from across Asia, including events such as athletics. Notably, the well-known former relay runner Shimazu is among the notable figures competing in the para athletics events at these Games.
The Asian Para Games are a multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities, held regularly to promote the para sports movement in the region.
