Hampshire Police in England have confirmed that former England international Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) with intent to inhale it illegally, following an accident on the M3 motorway in May.
A spokesperson for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police said in a statement sent to Reuters on August 14: "Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged with the following offenses: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for unlawful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen for analysis."
Sterling is expected to appear at a magistrates' court on September 15 to hear the charges.
According to police, the former Chelsea striker drove his Lamborghini into a central reservation on the M3. The incident did not involve any other vehicles and no injuries were reported.
Sterling joined Feyenoord on a short-term contract in February after leaving Chelsea by mutual agreement. He is currently unattached to any club following the end of last season.
