The Kyoto Imperial Palace in western Japan began its special autumn public opening on Thursday, giving visitors a last chance to view the exterior of the main hall before the structure is covered for renovation work.
Under the plan, the main hall will be wrapped in protective covering throughout the repairs, which are expected to last about nine years. The current special opening is therefore seen as a rare opportunity for the public to take in the building's exterior before it disappears behind the construction sheeting.
The Kyoto Imperial Palace is one of Japan's important historic sites, regularly drawing large numbers of domestic and international visitors, particularly during peak seasons such as autumn.
