The youngest son of detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has demanded that Myanmar's military government provide proof of life, as information about her condition remains unclear.
The demand came after the junta announced in April 2026 that Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence had been reduced from its previous length to about 17 years in prison. They also stated that she had been moved from prison to house arrest.
However, her son said these statements were insufficient to confirm her actual condition. He urged authorities to produce clear evidence, such as photographs or direct information, to ensure she is still alive and being treated fairly.
Aung San Suu Kyi was convicted on various charges after the military seized power in February 2021, with an initial total sentence of more than 30 years. The reduction in sentence and change in detention conditions were seen as an unexpected move by the junta, but have sparked widespread skepticism from the international community and her family.
There has been no official response from Myanmar's military government to this request. Human rights groups and many Western countries have repeatedly called for Aung San Suu Kyi's release and the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.
