WASHINGTON – According to an expert, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may seek new summits with US President Donald Trump, possibly after the midterm elections this fall, if Pyongyang adopts a "revised" approach to cement its position as a nuclear-armed state.
Speaking at a seminar on Thursday, the expert argued such a move could occur if North Korea adjusts its negotiation strategy, aiming for recognition of its nuclear status as part of a deal. This contrasts with Washington's previous stance, which demanded Pyongyang's complete denuclearization before any sanctions relief.
The US midterm elections, scheduled for November, could provide a favorable window for the two leaders to rekindle summitry, following a series of historic meetings between Kim and Trump since 2018.
There has been no official response from North Korea or the White House regarding this assessment. Nuclear talks between the two countries remain deadlocked since the second summit in Hanoi in 2019.
