On May 17, the main temple located on Mount Koya (Japan) officially called on visitors coming this summer to avoid wearing revealing clothing, such as tank tops, excessively short shorts, or spaghetti-strap dresses.
According to an announcement from the temple's management, dressing immodestly not only spoils the aesthetic but also affects the solemn atmosphere of the spiritual area. The temple particularly emphasized that visitors should choose modest attire that covers the shoulders and knees when entering the temple grounds.
This move comes amid a surge in domestic and international tourists to Mount Koya during summer, raising management concerns about preserving cultural and religious values. The temple also encourages visitors to bring a shawl or a light jacket to cover up if needed.
Mount Koya is one of the most important centers of Shingon Buddhism in Japan, attracting thousands of pilgrims and sightseers each year.
