International Paralympic Committee (IPC) President Andrew Parsons praised the legacy of the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics during a meeting with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike on Friday.
Speaking at the meeting, Parsons emphasized that the Tokyo Paralympics left a positive and lasting impact, not only in sports but also in changing societal perceptions of persons with disabilities. He commended the host nation’s thorough preparations and organizational spirit, which contributed to a successful Games despite being held during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Governor Koike, in turn, expressed appreciation for Parsons’ remarks and reaffirmed the Tokyo government’s commitment to maintaining and building upon the Games’ legacy, including sports infrastructure and initiatives promoting a more inclusive society for persons with disabilities.
The meeting took place as Tokyo seeks to leverage the achievements of the 2021 Summer Olympics and Paralympics to drive socio-economic development and improve the quality of life for its residents, particularly the disability community.
