CAF has declared support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to seek a fourth term in 2027, despite the three-term limit. Infantino's first partial term is not counted, allowing him to run again.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on April 30 that it will back FIFA President Gianni Infantino in his bid for re-election in 2027, paving the way for a fourth term at the helm of world football's governing body.
In a statement following a meeting ahead of the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, Canada, CAF said its members had "unanimously approved" supporting Infantino when he stands for re-election next year.
Infantino took charge of FIFA in 2016 following a corruption scandal that forced predecessor Sepp Blatter to resign. He was re-elected twice, in 2019 and 2023.
Although FIFA's statutes limit the president to a maximum of three terms, Infantino remains eligible to run again next year after the organization determined that his partial first term from 2016 to 2019—after Blatter left office—does not count toward the total.
CAF's decision follows a pledge of support from the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) earlier this month for the Swiss-Italian official.
