In a dramatic Group B opener at World Cup 2026 in Toronto, Canada and Bosnia & Herzegovina played out a 1-1 draw, with the home side securing their first World Cup point in history.
Bosnia took the lead in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic nodded home from a corner kick, scoring his first international goal and putting the side, back at the World Cup after a 12-year absence, ahead.
Canada pressed forward immediately after. In the 53rd minute, Richie Laryea thought he had equalized, but his shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Sead Kolasinac. Canada continued to push but lacked precision in their final attempts.
In the 76th minute, Canada's coach brought on Larin. Just three minutes later, the Southampton striker turned and fired inside the box, with the ball deflecting off a Bosnia defender past goalkeeper Vasilj to level the match and send the home crowd into raptures.
Earlier, Jonathan David almost opened the scoring for Canada, only to be denied by Vasilj. At the other end, goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau—making his World Cup debut after recovering from a broken leg in 2022—produced a stunning save to deny Ermedin Demirovic.
The draw was not the start Canada had hoped for, but it delivered a historic point on home soil at the world's biggest football tournament.
