Protests against rising fuel prices in Kenya have turned violent, resulting in casualties. Initial reports indicate several people have been killed and injured in clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
The unrest erupted after the Kenyan government announced a new round of petrol price hikes, pushing the already high cost of living to record levels. Protesters gathered in major cities, including the capital Nairobi, to denounce current economic policies.
In an effort to disperse the crowds, police used tear gas and other forceful measures. As a result, at least two people have died and dozens have been injured, according to local hospital sources. Security forces maintain that their actions were aimed at preventing chaos and protecting property.
Civil society organizations and the opposition have strongly condemned the use of force and called on the government to engage in dialogue to resolve the economic crisis. The spike in fuel prices is attributed to the devaluation of the local currency and cuts in energy subsidies.
