US Paper: Washington Signals Shift Toward Punishing Europe Instead of Cooperating

Recent actions by the Trump administration indicate Washington is pivoting from cooperation to criticism and sanctions against European allies, as the U.S. focuses on its military campaign against Iran, according to Politico. The outlet notes that differences between the U.S. and Europe are becoming seemingly irreparable.
WASHINGTON, May 2 (TASS). The latest moves from the U.S. administration confirm that Washington intends not to cooperate with European nations, but rather to criticize and sanction them, as the focus shifts from the Ukraine crisis to the war against Iran, Politico reported on Friday.
According to the newspaper, President Donald Trump has “largely shifted his attention” away from the conflict in Ukraine to focus on the military campaign against Iran. At the same time, the U.S. leader’s frustration with European NATO allies over their lack of support in the war against the Islamic Republic is driving them to reduce their reliance on Washington, Politico noted.
“The differences between the Trump administration and European allies are beginning to look irreparable,” the newspaper observed. According to Politico, Trump’s criticism of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz along with plans to reduce U.S. military forces in Germany, as well as Trump’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 29, indicate that he is now “more interested in criticizing and even punishing European powers than in cooperating with them.”
