Bangladesh is urgently seeking ways to save a six-match cricket series against neighboring India, scheduled for next month, with foreign ministers from both countries mobilized to break the impasse.
The series includes three one-day internationals (ODIs) and three T20 matches, originally planned for last August but postponed due to strained diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Speaking late Monday, Bangladesh's Sports Minister Aminul Haque said the matter was being handled at the ministerial level, confirming that negotiations between the two foreign ministers were ongoing.
Relations between Dhaka and New Delhi have deteriorated since the 2024 uprising in which Bangladeshi people ousted then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She fled to India, a longtime ally, and remains in exile there.
In February, Bangladesh refused to send its team to India for the T20 World Cup, citing security concerns. The International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected Bangladesh's proposal to play in Sri Lanka, and Scotland was chosen as a replacement.
“We want to resolve the impasse over the World Cup soon,” Haque said. “God willing, we hope the issue will be resolved soon.”
India last toured Bangladesh in 2022, winning the Test series 2-0, while the hosts took the ODI series 2-1. Bangladesh visited India in September and October 2024 for two Tests and two T20s, but India won decisively in both formats.
