Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei on March 26 strongly condemned a US drone strike on a residential area on Qeshm Island in southern Iran. In an official statement, Baghaei described the act as “a terrorist attack” and said it was “reminiscent” of past US atrocities in the region.
The incident comes amid escalating Iran-US tensions in the Gulf. According to local sources, the airstrike damaged several homes and killed at least three people. Baghaei emphasized that targeting civilians is a “blatant violation of international law” and called on the international community to condemn the action.
Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz, is a strategically important area frequently affected by military confrontations. This is not the first time Iran has accused the US of striking civilian targets in the region. In January 2020, a US airstrike in Baghdad killed General Qasem Soleimani, leading to a series of regional tensions.
The US has not yet made an official comment on the latest allegation. However, US officials have previously stated that attacks target Iran-backed armed groups, which they consider a threat to US forces stationed in Iraq and Syria. Relations between Tehran and Washington have deteriorated since the US withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed severe economic sanctions.
Meanwhile, local residents on Qeshm Island say they are living in fear as airstrikes continue. Several international humanitarian organizations have called for restraint and the protection of civilians. The incident risks further complicating the already unstable situation in the Middle East, as talks on Iran's nuclear program have yet to make significant progress.
