The UK Ministry of Defence confirmed that three Royal Navy personnel were killed in a helicopter crash early Wednesday local time near the village of Sourton in Devon, southwest England.
The accident occurred around 4 a.m. (03:00 GMT) during a helicopter training exercise, according to a Royal Navy spokesperson.
The Ministry of Defence announced the news with “deep sadness” on social media. “Our thoughts and condolences are with their families and friends at this difficult time,” it said.
Sky News reported that local police were at the crash site. A police spokesperson said: “The incident is being handled, and we will provide more details when available.”
Admiral Gwyn Jenkin, commander of the Royal Navy, said an investigation is underway.
Few details about the circumstances leading to the crash have been released so far. The Ministry of Defence said the victims’ families have requested “a period of quiet” before more information is made public.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed he is monitoring the situation. “This will be an incredibly worrying time for the families, and further details will be provided as soon as possible,” Sky News quoted him as saying.
British media reported that several naval bases are near the crash area, including HMNB Devonport, the largest naval base in Western Europe.
