Australia booked their place in the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup after a goalless draw against Paraguay in Santa Clara. The result lifted the Socceroos to second in Group D with four points.
The Australian side, which beat Turkey in its opener before losing to the United States, faced few scares in Thursday’s match and secured a point to advance to the round of 32 at Levi's Stadium in Northern California.
It is the third time in seven World Cup appearances that Australia has progressed beyond the group stage. The draw also all but assured Paraguay a knockout berth as one of the eight best third-placed teams in the group phase.
In the parallel match, the United States, despite losing 3-2 to Turkey in Los Angeles, still finished top of Group D, regardless of the result.
