Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Aston Villa on Monday, thanks to Bukayo Saka's second-half goal. The Gunners have now won their opening two league matches without conceding, while Villa remain pointless after two games. Arsenal next face Chelsea in a top-of-the-table London derby.
Arsenal extended their perfect start to the new Premier League season as Bukayo Saka's goal earned a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday (31 August). The strike was the only goal of a tightly contested match, lifting the Gunners to six points from two games with a flawless defensive record.
Mikel Arteta's side have now matched Manchester City, Hull City and Chelsea in the early standings, having yet to concede a goal. The match also marked Arteta's 250th Premier League game in charge of Arsenal, and the win served as a fitting celebration of that milestone.
Arsenal fielded the same starting lineup that swept past Coventry 3-0 in their opening fixture ten days earlier. Saka continued his impressive form, producing the decisive moment to secure all three points.
Late in the game, centre-back Ezri Konsa came off the bench to make his Arsenal debut against his former club. Konsa joined the Gunners on 21 August for £51 million (around $69 million).
The north London side face their first major test of the title defence when they host Chelsea next weekend. Chelsea have also won their opening two matches and will arrive in strong form.
In other news, Arsenal are still pursuing Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez ahead of Tuesday's (1 September) transfer deadline. More concerning for Arteta is the injury to Declan Rice, who limped off in the closing minutes.
For Aston Villa, the sense of frustration is growing after a second consecutive defeat, following a 0-4 thrashing at Brighton in their opener. Manager Unai Emery saw his team struggle to create chances, and the club has been forced to sell key players to comply with Premier League financial fair play rules.
Villa have parted ways with Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Lucas Digne, and Youri Tielemans over the summer. This team is a shadow of the youthful group that ended a 30-year trophy drought last season. Their struggles were underscored by a partially closed stand at Villa Park due to ongoing stadium expansion work.
Clinical Arsenal edge out hosts
Nicolas Jackson made his Aston Villa debut, replacing Watkins in attack, while Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, a new signing from Parma, also started for the hosts.
Arsenal made a slow start and nearly fell behind when Emiliano Buendia struck the crossbar. However, they soon regained control, with Pau Torres making a superb block to deny Christos Tzolis from Saka's cross. Late in the first half, Arsenal were denied a penalty when Riccardo Calafiori appeared to be fouled by Torres inside the box.
Arteta replaced Tzolis with Eberechi Eze at halftime, a change that made an immediate difference. In the 59th minute, Eze fed Calafiori, who advanced down the left and delivered a cross for Saka to finish from close range.
Kai Havertz forced a save from Suzuki, and Konsa was introduced to a mix of boos and applause from Villa fans. With Konsa's presence, Arsenal's defence grew more assured and protected their slender lead comfortably.
Arteta praised the win as “immensely important”, saying: “This is a difficult place to come and get three points. I think we deserved it. My team put in a fantastic performance. I know how hard it is to win here. Every top side struggles against them because they are good.”
Emery remained defiant despite defeat: “Losing is painful, but after that pain we must find positives. We have only played two of 38 games, and although we have no points, I hope we can improve.”
