British police have arrested a 22-year-old on suspicion of terrorism offences as part of the investigation into a security incident on 27 September at RAF Fairford, the airbase where the United States deploys bombers.
According to counter-terrorism officers, the suspect is linked to "activity that took place near RAF Fairford." In a statement, police said the arrest was made "on suspicion of the preparation of terrorist acts."
Vicki Evans, the national senior coordinator for counter-terrorism policing, said investigators "continue to pursue multiple lines of inquiry" and "remain committed to examining all possibilities."
It is the seventh arrest linked to an incident that remains unexplained after two weeks. The six people previously detained on suspicion of terrorism over an alleged plot targeting the base have all been released on bail.
On Sunday, the United States withdrew B-52 and B-1 bombers from RAF Fairford, though it is unclear whether the move was connected to the arrests. On Monday, US President Donald Trump said his administration pulled the B-1 bombers from the base because of what he described as "certain threats."
"We had a threat, and if we're threatened, we just move them out, it sort of takes care of the problem," Trump told reporters, adding that those behind the threat "will be associated with Iran," without elaborating.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the UK had seen "strong indications" that Iran played a role in the incident, but did not provide details.
Iran has denied involvement, though it has previously said it considers any base used to attack its territory a legitimate target.
