Egypt has declared it is ready to provide "all necessary and possible support" to Saudi Arabia to safeguard the country's safety and stability, as Houthi forces in Yemen continue to launch attacks against the kingdom.
In a statement on Sunday, the Supreme National Defense Council, chaired by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, affirmed that Egypt "stands fully alongside" Saudi Arabia in protecting its resources, territorial integrity and the Islamic holy sites.
The presidential office added that Cairo will also step up diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.
The Houthis, an Iran-backed armed group also known as Ansar Allah (Arabic for "Supporters of God"), have in recent days attacked Riyadh International Airport and the national oil company Saudi Aramco. The attacks come as fighting in Yemen has flared up again between the Houthis and Saudi-backed forces of the internationally recognized government, after a ceasefire agreement collapsed.
In a speech on Saturday, President Sisi said Egypt would act on the guidance of Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The crown prince visited Sisi last month, after fighting in Yemen resumed.
