BANGKOK — On the seventh day of the search for seven Lao nationals trapped in a flooded cave, rescue teams are still facing severe challenges due to rugged terrain and adverse weather. As of Tuesday (May 20), no signs of communication have been received from the group since they became trapped.
According to local officials, the group of seven entered the cave several days ago and were suddenly cut off by rising floodwaters that blocked the exit. Rescue teams have been deployed, but reaching the inner sections of the cave has been hindered by strong currents and narrow passages.
“We are doing our utmost, but the situation is very complex. The water level inside the cave continues to rise, and the surrounding terrain is extremely difficult,” a rescue official said. No specific information is yet available on the health condition of those trapped.
Cave experts have been mobilized to assist, along with water pumps and specialized lighting equipment. However, weather forecasts indicate that heavy rain may continue in the coming days, increasing the risk of further flooding and hampering rescue efforts.
The incident occurred in Khammouane province, central Laos, an area known for its limestone caves and underground river systems. Authorities are coordinating with international rescue organizations to find the most viable plan.
