The 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) results, released recently, show that six Iranian universities have secured positions among the top 1,000 globally, reflecting a notable improvement in the country's higher education standards on the international stage.
In this list, Tehran University continues to lead Iran, ranking in the 301-400 band. It is followed by Sharif University of Technology and Tehran University of Medical Sciences, both placed in the 501-600 group.
In the next tier, Amirkabir University of Technology (also known as Tehran Polytechnic) and Shiraz University of Medical Sciences are ranked in the 601-700 band. Meanwhile, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences sits in the 801-900 group.
Notably, the number of Iranian universities in the top 1,000 has increased from five (in 2023) to six this year, with Isfahan University of Medical Sciences being the new addition compared to the previous edition.
The ARWU, initiated by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China in 2003, is regarded as one of the three most influential university rankings globally, alongside QS and THE. The ranking is based on criteria such as the number of scientific papers published in prestigious journals, the number of highly cited researchers, and the achievements of faculty and alumni, including Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
