UK jailing of Indian sailor over Russia sanctions sets off ‘perfect storm’
Indian ship captain Ajay Pant is being held in the UK on charges of breaching British sanctions on Russia after Royal Marines intercepted his tanker, MT Smyrtos, in the English Channel in June while it was in international waters. The case, the first known instance of a European nation jailing a ship's master on such grounds, could set a precedent for how sanctions are enforced at sea and has raised alarms among seafarer advocates about the 'criminalisation of seafarers'. His wife Ritu Pant, speaking from Uttarakhand, says the case goes beyond their family and asks whether a captain can be punished for decisions beyond his control.
