Voters in the 2026 US midterm elections rejected data centre development in all but one of 41 ballot measures addressing the issue, according to the election-monitoring project Data Centers on the Ballot. The results signal that opposition to AI-driven data centre construction has become a bipartisan concern tied to energy costs, water use and job anxiety, and helped propel Democrats such as Sherrod Brown, Gina Hinojosa and James Talarico in key races.
