Courts grant ex-Malaysian PM Najib house arrest after $12m royal pardon
Malaysia's jailed former Prime Minister Najib Razak has been granted house arrest after his party, UMNO, raised a 50 million ringgit ($12m) fine through crowdfunding, following a royal pardon agreed by King Sultan Ibrahim in September. Najib, imprisoned since 2022 over the 1MDB corruption scandal, could begin serving his sentence at home on Friday, his lawyer said. The decision has stirred political debate in Malaysia, including questions about Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's anticorruption stance.
