Elon Musk joked online about Republican defeats in the 2026 US midterms after reportedly spending $446m to support the party, which lost both the Senate and House. Democrats also won in traditionally Republican states such as Texas and Kansas, and Musk's favored candidates for Senate and governor in Texas were defeated.
Democrats won several US House seats in Florida that the Republican-led legislature had redrawn to favor the GOP, including Kathy Castor holding the 14th district with a nearly 16-point swing toward Democrats. First-time candidate Pia Dandiya won the 22nd and Jared Moskowitz retained the 25th, while Darren Soto held a slim lead in the 9th as votes were counted Wednesday. The results marked a setback for President Donald Trump's party in a midterm election widely seen as a referendum on his leadership, with Democrats winning both chambers of Congress.
Democrats have retaken control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday's U.S. midterm elections, according to projections by major U.S. media outlets, in a sharp voter rebuke of President Donald Trump and his Republican Party over their performance in his second term. The result, reported by Kyodo News, marks a major shift in the balance of power in Washington midway through Trump's term.
