Houston Mayor John Whitmire signed an executive order sharply limiting city police cooperation with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), following Democratic victories in Texas statewide races, despite the state's 2017 law against "sanctuary" policies. Under the new rules, police will contact ICE only when someone is arrested for a jailable offence, not for minor traffic stops or administrative immigration warrants. Whitmire said he consulted Texas's newly elected governor, lieutenant governor and comptroller, and described the move as part of a healing process he hopes other Texas cities will emulate.
