Banana producers in Latin America want better pay to cope with effects of climate crisis
Banana producers in Latin America are urging international buyers to pay prices that reflect real production costs as a super El Niño event cuts yields and exports across Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and the Dominican Republic. Colombian Caribbean exports fell 32% between July and September, and Fairtrade warns climate impacts will be more severe than in the 2023-24 cycle. Growers and ethical trade bodies want UK legislation against unfair trading practices and supermarket prices that cover labour, environmental and climate-adaptation costs.
