Canary Islands’ El Hierro declares emergency amid migrant, refugee influx
Authorities on El Hierro in Spain’s Canary Islands have declared an emergency and asked Madrid for help after more than 3,300 migrants and refugees arrived by boat since the start of November. Local leader Alpidio Armas cited an "absolutely unsustainable" situation, with officials seeking temporary accommodation and warning that hospital conditions have become "undesirable". The Atlantic route from West Africa remains one of the world's deadliest migration crossings, with several deaths reported in recent weeks.
