WHO approves trials for two new Ebola vaccines
The WHO has approved clinical trials for two new Ebola vaccines designed specifically to target the Bundibugyo strain, which has killed more than 5,300 people, most in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, since May. The outbreak is the largest and fastest-growing in DRC history, with 10,444 confirmed cases, and public health agencies have struggled to contain the virus due to the lack of a Bundibugyo-specific vaccine or treatment. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also urged countries to lift travel restrictions, warning they discourage transparent reporting.
