ANC faces bruising defeat in South African local elections with 80% of ballots counted
South Africa's ruling African National Congress is heading for a heavy defeat in local elections, dropping to 31.8% of the national vote with more than 80% of ballots counted — almost 14 percentage points below its 2021 result. The ANC is projected to lose its position as the largest party in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, with coalition talks under way and final results due Sunday.
