Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican Mike Rogers to become the first Muslim elected to the US Senate, in a midterm race marked by attacks on his faith and name from President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. The 42-year-old physician and former public health official took more than 52 percent of the vote with over 95 percent counted, and vowed to tackle economic inequality, healthcare costs and US military intervention abroad.
Democrats won several US House seats in Florida that the Republican-led legislature had redrawn to favor the GOP, including Kathy Castor holding the 14th district with a nearly 16-point swing toward Democrats. First-time candidate Pia Dandiya won the 22nd and Jared Moskowitz retained the 25th, while Darren Soto held a slim lead in the 9th as votes were counted Wednesday. The results marked a setback for President Donald Trump's party in a midterm election widely seen as a referendum on his leadership, with Democrats winning both chambers of Congress.
