Nithya Raman wins LA mayoral race, becoming city’s first South Asian mayor
Nithya Raman, a progressive Los Angeles City Council member backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, has defeated incumbent Mayor Karen Bass and is set to become the first South Asian mayor of the United States' second-largest city. The Associated Press called the race with Raman holding 52 percent of the vote, ending Bass's re-election bid after a turbulent term marked by criticism over homelessness and the Palisades Fire response. Raman campaigned on expanding affordable housing, deploying more medical teams for unhoused residents, and replacing the police chief over cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
