Spanish transport minister resigns after train crash killed 69 people
Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente has resigned and withdrawn from the upcoming general election after a high-speed train collision in Castilla-La Mancha killed 69 people, the second major rail disaster in Spain in under a year. He cited January's Andalusia derailment, which killed 46, as making his position untenable. The crash occurred when a Renfe train was authorised to continue onto a stretch of the Madrid-Seville line where trains had been ordered to stop after a signal failure, colliding with a stationary Iryo train.
