Nobel Peace laureate Pillay condemns U.S. sanctions on ICC

THE HAGUE — This year's Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navanethem Pillay on Tuesday condemned the recent U.S. sanctions on the International Criminal Court as "unlawful, unacceptable interference in the independence of the judiciary," according to a statement.

Pillay, a South African jurist who served as U.N. high commissioner for human rights and as a judge at the ICC, made the remarks in response to Washington's move to impose sanctions on the court.

The sanctions have drawn criticism from supporters of the tribunal, who argue they undermine its ability to carry out investigations and prosecutions independently.

Pillay was awarded this year's Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work on international justice and human rights.
