Former Australian Catholic Bishop Sentenced to 6.5 Years for Sexually Abusing Two Indigenous Men
Christopher Saunders, 76, the former bishop of the Broome diocese, was sentenced by the District Court of Western Australia to six and a half years in prison for sexually abusing two Aboriginal men, offenses committed between 2010 and 2019. The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference apologized, saying victims' trust was deeply betrayed by a church leader. The case adds to a string of scandals that have rocked the Australian Catholic Church in recent years.
